Question: How long does it take to receive digital sheet music files?

Answer: The average time it takes to download a digital sheet music file is about seven seconds (at 28.8 kbps). Each page in your digital sheet music files is approximately 10k in size.

Question: What do I do with my digital sheet music after I purchase it?

Answer: Once you have purchased a piece of digital sheet music and have downloaded the musicnotes.com player you can:

  • Click and hear any note or chord - the notation is wired for sound!
  • Select any symbol, such as a guitar bend, to listen or learn how to play it.
  • Change the speed of the music. Practice at a slow tempo and gradually speed up as you improve your skills.
  • Watch the notation and lyrics light up in synchronization with either the MIDI or a CD performance.

Question: My friend sent me a digital sheet music file. How do I make it work on my computer?

Answer: You need to download our free musicnotes.com player, which reads and plays digital sheet music files. musicnotes.com encourages you to share your digital sheet music files with friends and family. However, when you send digital files you have purchased to someone else (or even to yourself for use on a different computer), they become sample files.

Question: What is the musicnotes.com viewer and why should I download it?

Answer: The musicnotes.com viewer is a type of plug-in, like Adobe's Acrobat or Macromedia's Shockwave. A plug-in is software that works with web browsers to offer multimedia and other extended capabilities. The musicnotes.com viewer allows you to view, hear, and print digital sheet music right from your browser. The installation is an automatic, one-time only, thirty-second download (at 28.8 kbps) for first-time visitors. If you haven't already downloaded the viewer or if you are not sure that you have received it, you can get it in our download area.

Want to see some music by your favorite artist? After completing the download process, go to the power search page, and type in the name of your favorite composer or performing artist. Then look for these digital sheet music icons in your search results:

You may choose to narrow your smart search so that your results only include digital sheet music. Select just digital sheet music under the "search for" drop-down menu on the Power Search page. Happy browsing!

Question: What is the musicnotes.com player and why should I download it?

Answer: The musicnotes.com player allows you to view and hear the digital sheet music files you have purchased. After printing and saving your purchased digital sheet music files, the musicnotes.com player lets you open the files on your computer without the aid of your web browser. When you play your files on the musicnotes.com player, notice how the notes light up as the music goes by. Some files can even be synchronized to a CD. If you see the words "CD-synched digital sheet music" in your search results, you can use the corresponding CD for playback. The musicnotes.com player also comes with a free music encyclopedia, the Musicteacher™. Click any term or symbol and the Musicteacher™ will tell you more about it. Click any note or chord and hear how it sounds.

Question: What's the difference between the viewer and the player?

Answer: Think of our musicnotes.com viewer as your library pass into musicnotes.com — it's a tool for searching and viewing files in our music library, giving you access to all of the digital sheet music files we sell. Without it, you will not be able to see or print the portions of our catalog we are most proud of. The musicnotes.com viewer works inside your web browser to display the digital sheet music we have in our library.

The musicnotes.com player, on the other hand, is a free software program that allows you to get the most out of the digital sheet music files you have purchased and printed. The musicnotes.com player enables you to view and hear your digital sheet music files from your computer. Without it, you can print the music you purchase, but you cannot play or see the entire file from your computer. You also will not have access to the Musicteacher™, our music encyclopedia that comes free with the musicnotes.com player.

Question: How do I know your downloads are safe?

Answer: You have our assurance that you are receiving files from musicnotes.com and no one else. The viewer and player are fairly self-contained applications of modest size. Our software does not effect device drivers, system hardware (sound cards, etc.), nor does it make changes to your system files.

Question: What happens when I download your musicnotes.com viewer, and why won't I regret it?

Answer: Downloading our musicnotes.com viewer is a simple, automated process that takes less than thirty seconds for completion. The musicnotes.com viewer installer is 210K, and the viewer itself is 180K. This standard Netscape plug-in will be installed in either your Netscape or Internet Explorer directories and will then work in conjunction with your own Internet browser after download. The installer will also put our doremi font in your font folder, so you may see it included in the drop-down lists of other programs. Best of all, you will now be able to browse through all of the digital sheet music files in our library! First-time visitors to musicnotes.com should have received a dialog box asking them whether or not they wish to install the musicnotes.com viewer. If you are not certain you have the viewer or need to download it again, please visit the software download area and follow the short set of instructions for your particular browser.

Question: What happens when I download the musicnotes.com player, and why won't I regret it?

Answer: The player is a fairly self-contained application of modest size (1.4 MB download, 3 MB unpacked). The following five files will be placed in c:/program files/musicnotes/player (default location):

  • Musnotes.cnt - the table of contents portion of your musicnotes.com help (Musnotes.hlp) file. This can be accessed from inside the player by selecting Help Topics under the Help menu.
  • Musnotes.exe - the player program
  • Musnotes.gid - a hidden index file created when you first access the musicnotes.com help file.
  • Musnotes.hlp - your musicnotes.com help file. This can be accessed from inside the player by selecting Help Topics under the Help menu.
  • Welcome.mtd - a free digital sheet music file.

Question: What is a sample file?

Answer: A sample file is the first page of a digital sheet music file. Sample files can be displayed inside your musicnotes.com viewer from your Internet browser, or through the musicnotes.com player on your computer. Unlike purchased files, sample files are not synchronized to a MIDI rendition or CD performance, and you do not get the benefit of all the other features built in to the player.

Question: I searched for my favorite artist/song, but a lot of other artists/songs came back to me in the search results. Why?

Answer: It is likely that the songs, digital sheet music files, books or videos you received in the search results have something in common with the artist/song you searched for. If you receive too many results, try narrowing your search on the power search page.

Question: I searched for my favorite artist/song/instrument, but didn't get any results back. What do I do now?

Answer: Try widening your search. If you did a power search and entered information in more than one field, try a search on just one of these fields. It could be the case, however, that we do not have what you are looking for. Send us a suggestion, and we'll try our best to accommodate you.

Question: How big is your catalog?

Answer: musicnotes.com' library includes thousands of pieces of digital sheet music from Warner Bros. Publishing and Mel Bay Publications, with many titles from other publishers coming soon. In addition to the instantly deliverable digital sheet music, we offer a catalog of tens of thousands of traditional printed music titles from Warner Bros., Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, A-R Editions and others. These numbers are growing every day! If you searched and still cannot find what you're looking for, please send us a suggestion.
