The website is currently developing a suite of self-managed digital platforms, which will include a video download store, electronic press kits and other business tools.
Berrow adds, "Artists can now gain access to sophisticated business tools that would have been unthinkable two years ago, and this bandnameplus initiative goes some way to levelling the playing field in new media for aspiring and developing talent."

Bandname.com Launch Digital Store Kit For Bands
CMU
Unlimited - October
2005
The people behind band registry Bandname.com who, as previously reported,
recently acquired The Band Register, has announced it will launch a new
digital store facility that will offer any of its 2 million registered bands
the opportunity to sell digital music directly to their fans.
Unlike the other digital music platforms tuned into the independent and
unsigned space, Bandname.com's service is essentially a kit for bands to
manage their own download sales - the band sets how many tracks are
available, what formats are offered, what DRM is included and what price is
charged. Bandname.com's platform then does the billing.
Announcing the new service, Bandname.com co-founder Paul Berrow told CMU:
"The artist controls the process from beginning to end. They fix the price,
format and DRM capability and we enact all the commercial activities for the
download, card processing and SMS. Crucially there are no onerous long-term
commitments and we operate a transparent accounting policy with our members
throughout the relationship. The service stands on its own merits".

Faster route to the right track.

Even the most dismal rock group has numerous fan sites that are devoted to
cataloguing its lead singer's choice of breakfast cereal that morning. This
means that it can be frustrating trying to find an official site. In
among the dross, Bandmatrix.com, solves this by only listing official pages in
its database of 12,000 sites.

The do-it-yourself contingent might find some useful tools here after slogging
through the free registration process and getting to the innards of the site,
which bills itself as the "Worldwide Band Registry." You'll find
daily updated classified ads with a certain amount of inadvertent hilarity
sprinkled about (see Narkoleptik Willie, a "mild punk" band who
cautions, "We are a Christian band. If you can't deal with that ... too
bad. We play for Jesus," and the weekend vocalist looking for a
"songwriting partner such as a Lennon/McCartney team." Hey, try not
to snigger out loud; we've all got to start somewhere). Also find lists of
publicists, venues, publishers and managers for those looking for a signpost
pointing toward stardom - or at least a gig at the local dive bar. Other
offerings include the meaty Bandmagazine area, which has a wealth of resources
ranging from instructions on how to get signed to free advice from an
entertainment attorney to counsel from such luminaries as Duran Duran and
Spandau Ballet. Sure, veterans already know most of this stuff, but neophytes
can get a crash course in the intricacies of the star-making machinery before
selling their soul to the man.

it to search for new bands and up-to-date band news.

Got the perfect name for your band but worried that you might have a namesake
playing the circuit in Toronto? Well, worry no longer. Thanks to the new music
website bandname.com, you’ll be able to trawl their vast database for
information on any band monicker similar to your own. And if you don’t find a
match, you can register yours online. While it’s not a legally binding or even
a trademark, the service will help when it comes to that lengthy court case
brought against you by Giant Faceless Records / AOL Ltd over who has rights to
what name (not as uncommon a circumstance as you might believe). It’s certainly
a service that Bristol space rockers The Heads could have done with.
Despitetrading as The Heads for nearly ten years, they were threatened with court
actions when Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth decided on a whim to flog the
talking Heads sans David Byrne as, you guessed it, The Heads split after the
affair still managed to cause the indie UK Heads much heartache – especially as
they command a huge amount of respect in the States (where they are currently
touring) and a name change could have proved disastrous. In addition to the
court-avoiding services, bandname.com also provides regular updates, message
boards, industry news and plenty of other advice for new bands.

If you're playing in a band, recording dance music, or doing remixes, you probably
thought long and hard about a name for your enterprise. But if you come up with
a name you like, it can be disastrous if that name has already been taken. It
may not be much of a problem unless you plan to release a recording
commercially, but if someone else has been using that name, you may have to
come up with a new name (and begin building a reputation all over again).
So, how can you find out if your professional name is yours alone? A quick
and cost-free beginning is to search for names at the Worldwide Band Name
Registry at www.bandname.com. If it's
not registered there (thousands are), search all federal and state trademarks
and applications pending.
